How to Keep Your Lawn Green During Florida's Dry Season
If you've lived in Lynn Haven, Panama City, or anywhere in Bay County for more than a year, you're familiar with Florida's dry season. Typically running from roughly October through May, this period of reduced rainfall puts real stress on lawns — especially the warm-season grasses that thrive in our region. The good news is that with the right approach, you can keep your lawn looking green and healthy even when the rain doesn't cooperate.
The most important thing you can do during a dry period is water deeply and infrequently rather than lightly and often. Shallow, frequent watering encourages roots to stay near the soil surface, where they're most vulnerable to heat and drought stress. Deep watering — typically about half an inch to three-quarters of an inch per session — trains roots to grow deeper into the soil, where moisture is more consistent and temperatures are more stable.
Timing matters too. Water your lawn in the early morning, between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m., to reduce evaporation loss and give the grass blades time to dry before evening. Watering at night leaves moisture on the blades for extended periods, increasing the risk of fungal disease — a common problem for Bay County lawns during warm, humid stretches even within the dry season.
Raise your mowing height during dry spells. Taller grass shades the soil, slowing moisture evaporation and reducing soil temperature. For St. Augustine — the most common lawn grass in Lynn Haven and the Bay Area — maintaining a height of about three to four inches during dry periods gives you a meaningful advantage over shorter-cut turf that dries out much faster.
Avoid heavy fertilization when your lawn is already under drought stress. Applying high-nitrogen fertilizers to a struggling lawn pushes new growth that the plant can't actually support, which can worsen damage and leave your yard looking worse, not better. If fertilization is needed, wait for rainfall or a thorough irrigation session first and choose a slow-release formula.
